If you want to just plain cut on costs or you want to make a more environmentally approach towards your home, making your kitchen green can help you achieve both. Here are six simple ways you can do to make your kitchen greener.

1. Add some green plants

It’s time to bring green life into your kitchen. Plants increases oxygen and help to in air filtration – creating a calm atmosphere in your kitchen. It instantly uplifts the mood of everyone going to the kitchen. You can choose your favorite houseplants to place in the kitchen or maybe even grow your own herbs and vegetables. Hanging plants can also be a great idea if you’re a little worried about space.

2. Look for natural woods

One important thing you shouldn’t overlook is the quality of the woods in your kitchen. Pay close attention to their composition. Look for eco-friendly materials such as natural woods as many woods in the market today are made with the use of formaldehyde binders or glues that releases fumes. If you are really into making your kitchen green, consider this important. You can also choose from a bunch of other choices like tiles, stone, concrete, recycled glass, and stainless steel.

3. Energy-efficient cooking

It’s time to trade your full-size oven for a slow cooker. We usually tend to use the full-size oven for almost anything we can do in toasters, microwaves and slow cookers. Smaller ovens are not only more affordable and time-effective, they also have lower carbon footprint on the environment.

4. Opt for eco-friendly kitchen appliances

It pays to go for eco-friendly kitchen appliances as these appliances, which are Energy Star-rated consume 50% less energy than non-approved appliances. Not only can you help the environment, your monthly energy consumption is also likely to decrease!

5. Compost your food waste

If you’re really into the idea of going green, then you should begin composting your food waste right away. Tons of food waste is being thrown every day, every year. They are biodegradable, yes, but they don’t decompose the way they should be if not composted. This is one of the easiest things you can do in your kitchen to make it a little greener.

Make sure you put a small container at the kitchen counter for food scraps. This waste can be composted in your garden compost container or a composting center in your local neighborhood.

6. Use green cleaning product

The idea of a home isn’t clean if it doesn’t have the top rated steam cleaning machine or it doesn’t smell like lemons or pines should stop. Who says being clean should smell? Or that we have to spend bucks just to buy the best steam cleaning machine?

Try going for greener, less expensive cleaning methods like using vinegar and baking soda as your cleaning agents. Baking soda is an effective agent in removing grease from kitchen countertops while the vinegar is a great cleaning agent. A soap with water, the most basic, can be used to clean just about anything, from countertops to floors. Toss your rags and sponges in a pot of boiling water to sterilize them. These things can also be used throughout the whole house.

In the end, always remember that these are just small steps to help you begin your journey of going green and that consistency is the key. By continuing these practices, you are slowly contributing your share. It’s also helpful to always look for new ways on how you can help the environment. And now is the perfect time to start.
