Reef Safe Sunscreen Guide [Visual]

Reef Safe Sunscreen Guide [Visual] | ecogreenlove

It’s no secret that sunscreen is important to staying safe under the sun! Unfortunately, the sunscreen that protects us often means “danger” for our friends in the sea.

The National Park Service says 4,000 to 6,000 tons of sunscreen is found annually in reef areas. High-traffic areas that host activities like snorkeling and diving are home to higher concentrations of sunscreen than less visited areas. You might be wondering, “Why does this matter?”

Many popular sunscreen ingredients like oxybenzone are known to bleach and kill coral reefs. In addition to harming reefs, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) found that sunscreen chemicals cause reproduction, growth and immune system complications for sea wildlife.

Bans on sunscreen with harmful ingredients are already in place in a few areas. However, these ingredients are still present in many popular brands. Unfortunately, grabbing “reef safe” labeled sunscreen doesn’t solve the problem either, as the use of the term “reef safe” isn’t regulated. Instead, you’ll need to know the difference between safe and harmful ingredients yourself.

Below, we dive into well-known toxic sunscreen ingredients and give tips for picking reef-friendly sunscreen.

The benefits of standing desks to improve your workday [Visual]

Most office workers know it’s difficult to maintain the correct posture in an office chair for hours. And sitting in front of a computer all day can cause back pain, neck pain, and tight shoulders, among other possible issues.

It’s little wonder, then, that standing desks and desks that convert between sitting and standing (known as sit-and-stand desks) are growing in popularity. In fact, the Society for Human Resource Management reported a 9 percent increase in companies offering standing desks to workers between 2017 and 2018.

Going Green in your Apartment [Infographic]

Going Green in your Apartment [Infographic] | ecogreenlove

Intrinsically, living in an apartment is a more sustainable way of living than other modern lifestyles. This is because while living in your apartment, the odds are that you are in a urban center. Living in an urban center means that you’re close by to many things and you don’t need to use as many resources as your other modern lifestyle counterparts do. With that being said, there are still countless ways to make your living arrangement that much more environmentally friendlier! And great news for you, many of them are simple and easy to implement. It doesn’t take much to reduce your ecological footprint and have a greater positive impact on the world.

One example is purchasing and using all-natural cleaning supplies. This is an important step because the cleaning supplies that contain harmful chemicals can find their way into the city’s waterways after they go down your drain. Another example is making the switch to LED light fixtures. With this switch, you’ll be consuming less electricity which means burning fewer resources every time you flip the switch. If you’re planning on furnishing your place, try looking at estate sales or resale shops to rescue pieces from the landfill as opposed to buying new.

Embracing these minor changes goes a long way! For additional tips on going green in your apartment, continue reading the infographic below!

Anatomy of an Agrihood [Infographic]

Anatomy of an Agrihood [Infographic] | ecogreenlove

An agrihood is a mixed development that combines food and real estate. These neighborhood villages offer residential living with a farm-to-table focus for young, active families seeking a lifestyle centered around simplicity and sustainability.

While these communities are still somewhat of a novelty, demand is expected to grow now that millennials are the largest share of homebuyers on the market today. Agrihoods are part of a larger movement known as “new urbanism” to create walkable, mixed-use communities that prioritize healthful living and strong connections.

Living in an agrihood doesn’t mean you’ve suddenly become a working farmer. Residents are encouraged to volunteer at the farm, but the actual work is done by professionals who tend to the land and then sell the produce to residents and retailers, such as nearby restaurants and grocery stores.
