How Animal-Assisted Therapy reduce Pain and improve our Quality of Life [Infographic]

For anyone who has ever been in a hospital, gone through the demands of physical therapy, or had a loved one in a nursing home, it goes without saying the experience can be difficult. However, as scientists are starting to discover, using animal-assisted therapy in these and other situations can have a very positive impact on patients.

As most people know, kids and pets often make a great combination. This is especially true when kids are in the hospital recovering from surgery, which can be a very scary experience.

When therapy animals were used with kids in these situations, researchers noticed many improvements. For starters, having an animal in their room helped kids come out of anesthesia much faster, and they were also found to be much more vigilant, aware, and active than kids not using animal-assisted therapy.

However, the positive effects of animal-assisted therapy are not limited to kids. When it comes to adults who are sick, animals can also be of tremendous help.

In numerous studies, adult hospital patients who were recovering from surgery or being treated for heart failure were found to have less pain, lower respiratory rates, improved moods, and improved cardiopulmonary pressures and neurohormone levels.

And when animal-assisted therapy was used with nursing home patients, it was found that the animals were able to improve their moods just as much as a visit from a spouse or other close family member.

When going through the often agonizing work of physical therapy, patients who had therapy animals by their side were often in far less pain, had an easier time completing tasks, were in a much better mood, and were able to communicate much better with therapists, nurses, and doctors than patients who were going through their therapy sessions solo.
