What to eat this month – October

Each fruit or vegetable has a prime time when it’s at its seasonal best. Some are great for over half of the year; others only hit their peak for a month. Sweetcorn, boiled and eaten on the cob is sweetness itself. Great as a simple, healthy snack or plucked to add the juicy kernels to salad. 

Our quick and tasty tip:

  • Try blackening in a dry non stick pan, then slicing off the kernels and mixing with lime, chopped tomato, chilli, mango and mint for a delicious salsa.

Cox Apples
The Cox is the quintessential English apple, widely said to have the finest taste of them all. October brings a bumper crop of these rosy, thin-skinned, crisp and sweet darlings.

Our quick and tasty tips:

  • Try sautéeing quartered and peeled apples in butter with a handful of sultanas until golden.
  • Add a lug of calvados, a sprinkling of sugar and a squeeze of lemon juice and continue to cook until just tender.
  • Delicious served with ice cream and pancakes.
